Although previous attempts to forge a peace deal have failed to stop the klling, Western officials are hoping that the ruinous violence and the inability of either side to prevail by force of arms will have left the combatants exhausted enough to agree to a compromise. Khartoum has also come under pressure from China, Sudan's major international trade partner, to bring peace to Darfur - Beijing is mindful that activists have begun linking the killing in Darfur with the Beijing Olympics in the hope that bad publicity will prompt the Chinese to turn the screws on Sudan...

...Then there's the economy, one of the poorest in the world. After 30 years of self-imposed isolation and ruinous quasi-socialist policies, the junta reversed course in the early 1990s, privatizing businesses, welcoming foreign trade and investment, and seeking international aid. Foreign journalists are routinely refused permission to travel to Zimbabwe, so I entered the country as a tourist and drove south from Bulawayo to the goldfields of the Great Dyke. I was following tens of thousands of Zimbabweans who, as the economy collapsed, headed to the gold-mining region of Matabeleland, hoping...
