Soon, European amateurs and scientists alike were also experimenting with rockets, most of them inspired by The Rocket into Interplanetary Space, a booklet published in 1923 by Rumanian Professor Hermann Oberth. German rocketeers eventually constructed a liquid-fuel rocket strikingly similar to Goddard's. By 1942, under the direction of Walter Dornberger and Wernher Von Braun, it had evolved into the dread V2, the first space-age rocket. After the successful test-firing of the V2, Dornberger turned to Von Braun and shouted exultantly: "Do you realize what we accomplished today? Today the spaceship was born...
...effect, Gomulka was suggesting second-class berths for weaker parties, and Western European Communists were furious. The leaders of French and Italian delegations both rose to announce that their parties intended to travel "our road toward socialism," as Italian Giancarlo Pajetta put it. Rumanian Delegate Chivu Stoica also declined to line up behind Gomulka's thesis. Russian Party Boss Leonid Brezhnev plumped for the Kremlin's long-sought Communist summit, which was postponed indefinitely after the invasion. But it was all too clear that European Communists are in no mood to convene in harmony...
Underground Future. In Manhattan, another type of automated garage, aptly called Speed-Park, is in operation. Invented by Rumanian-born Engineer Mihai Alimanestianu and built by Otis Elevator, it is designed to make the most of parking-space profits, which range from $500 to $2,000 a year per car space, depending on location. Speed-Park uses a computer-controlled moving elevator platform to whisk a car to one of eight levels, where hydraulic machinery shovels the auto into an empty stall. Total time for the cycle: 30 seconds. The system is by no means inexpensive; a one-elevator setup...
...this crisis, Ceausescu has become leader of the country in spirit as well as in title. Rumanians are clearly satisfied that the party leadership has refused to knuckle under. Ceausescu thus has accomplished in Rumania something like what Dubček earlier achieved in Czechoslovakia: the party has acquired its first genuinely widespread popularity. The Czechoslovak ambassador in Bucharest has a fat file containing the names of local families who have volunteered to take in stranded Czechs. A Rumanian writer who spent seven years in jail for organizing a demonstration in support of the rebel Hungarians in 1956 reported that...
Lamentations. Even his childhood memories as the son of a Rumanian couple living in France are rendered as scattered images rather than timebound incidents. Chronology, he implies, is untrustworthy; it has a way of running out. There is comfort in his childhood impressions, but they are inadequate protection against the despair that swamps him now at 55. His uneasiness spills forth in tuneless lamentations...
