Near the end of the evening rush hour, the engineer of commuter train No. 153951 peered down the tracks of Paris' Gare de Lyon and screamed in horror: another train was bearing down on him at high speed. Seconds later, the runaway train rammed 153951 at more than 50 m.p.h., turning it into a maze of shredded steel. The collision last week was the worst rail accident in Paris history and one of the worst ever in France. The toll: 56 dead and 13 seriously injured...

Fast food too. In their week at a North Woods cabin, Nice Guy John Candy and his family encounter every unimaginative pestilence: bats, raccoons, stubborn horses, runaway water skis, acid indigestion, puppy love. Carrie might have had just such a reserve if it held to its original $5 million budget. The show was eventually capitalized at $7 million, primarily by British and West German investors who had scant Broadway experience. But runaway costs reached, by some accounts, about $8 million, attributable partly to the high-tech fashion in current musicals, partly to the complexity of multinational production, partly to old-fashioned indulgence. Says the Royal Shakespeare Company's artistic director Terry Hands, who staged the show: "It started to be loaded with lavish trappings, none of which I believe were necessary." Sources involved...
