...another case, a 17-year-old runaway kept calling her parents collect. Using phone company records, Beltrante tracked her to a rundown house in a West Coast city. Not long ago, the wife of a federal judge asked him to check what her husband was doing while traveling to hear cases. She had the names of the two credit cards he used -enough for Beltrante's sources in the credit card companies to report on the errant judge's one-night stands. Trailing His Honor on a trip, one of Beltrante's agents watched him pick...

...stratagems to throw a dog off the trail. Some escapees have sprinkled pepper on their shoes or changed clothes -to no avail. Sloshing through a stream works, at least until the fugitive steps on dry ground and the dog is able to pick up the scent again. Costly Accident. Efforts to control the runaway well began within minutes. The Seaway Falcon, a specially designed fire-fighting ship already on station in the Ekofisk complex, rushed to the well and began spraying it with 8,000 tons of sea water an hour to prevent it from catching fire. Other ships, dispatched by a crisis control center in Stavanger, Norway, stood by to help, while aircraft were warned to stay clear of the area. A small fleet of recovery ships deployed booms to contain the oil so it could be collected, but their work was hampered by heavy seas...

...only way workers will ever achieve better wages, improve safety measures, and health conditions, and secure decent pension plans. For the AFL-CIO, the campaign is the first step toward unionizing the South and improving the conditions for Southern workers. That, in turn, could curb the pattern of Northern "runaway shops" moving south to avoid union labor, and help the economic development of the North-east...
