...glimpse into the greatness of Tiger Woods, look past his runaway victory in the British Open at St. Andrews last month. Forget his triumph--also by a record margin--in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in June. And set aside his prospects for stomping the field in another major tournament, next week's PGA Championship at Valhalla. Consider, instead, what Woods did right after he dominated the 1997 Masters. He studied videotapes of his performance: blasting 300-yd. drives, hitting crisp iron shots right at the pins, draining putts from everywhere. And he thought, as he later told friends...
...could NBC have missed this train? Didn't the runaway success of Millionaire alert everyone in the U.S. over the age of three that network TV was about to crash through yet another barrier of diminishing taste and expectations? Sassa explained this lapse of attention: "We were obsessed"--he might have said afflicted--"with having the highest quality shows and the highest quality audiences, and because of that we weren't as aggressive on [reality TV] as we could have been." In English: Frasier, Friends and Will & Grace were attracting the well-to-do young viewers advertisers cherish, and reality...
Even in this age of runaway jury verdicts, the punitive-damage awards that rang out in a hushed Miami courtroom last Friday were impressive. Against Philip Morris--$73.96 billion; R.J. Reynolds--$36.28 billion; Brown & Williamson--$17.59 billion; Lorillard--$16.25 million; Vector Group (owner of Liggett)--$790 million. By the time Circuit Court Judge Robert Kaye reached the bottom of the verdict sheet, the total had climbed to $144.8 billion. "A lot of zeros," the judge observed dryly...
...summer of 1997, the fatal shootings began to fall too thick and fast to be coincidental. On Aug. 26 two bodies were found in different parts of town: Heather Hernandez, 20, a drifter, and Jennifer Joseph, 16, a runaway, last seen in the passenger seat of a white Corvette speeding down East Sprague. By December, five more victims were discovered. All were shot in the head with handguns and found dumped by roadsides with plastic grocery bags over their heads. None had purses or wallets. As many as 18 murders in Washington State from 1990 to 1998 may be linked...
...have a personal perspective on Tiger's runaway victory at Pebble. It made me think back to my own U.S. Open victory at Oakmont in 1973. My final round there, an eight-under-par 63, remains the lowest ever shot in a major championship. But I wasn't able to maintain that level of focus for all four days of the tournament. My 63 was preceded by a 76. Tiger, by contrast, shot 65-69-71-67 and led virtually from wire to wire. Sure, you can say the same of Secretariat, but his big victory was accomplished in less...
