...recalls that Sanford more or less decided to run for office before she even knew which party he belonged to. But she knew his core belief: the government should be parsimonious with voters' money. His abhorrence of spending led to him sleeping in his Washington office on a futon, buying her a used bike as a combined birthday and Christmas present and returning a diamond necklace he'd purchased sight unseen - through a friend - because he ultimately decided it wasn't worth what he'd paid. Of course, none of this quite explains why he rarely remembered her birthday (Sept...

Whatever the reason that prompted Jenny Sanford to write Staying True - and it remains a mystery, since she needs neither the money nor the publicity and she has said she would never run for office - the writing was not done in the heat of anger. She comes off as tough, reasonable and shrewd. Mark comes off as lost rather than evil or profligate. Perhaps her levelheadedness, so vital to him when he was campaigning, became less enticing to him when he was the incumbent. He may find himself needing a campaign manager again. It's hard to imagine many South...

...development of the production itself. Originally created as a submission to and eventual performance at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, "[title of show]" (which is so named after the "title of show" position on the Festival's application) marches from the musical's conception in 2004 to its run off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre, after which it transferred to Broadway. These developments in the show's history were incorporated into the script as they came...

...about the time the show reaches off-Broadway, the shtick starts to get a bit stale. Hunter's attempt to exclude the too-committed Heidi from the Broadway run puts an exceptionally cliché bump in the fabulous foursome's trail, while the inclusion of any of the musical’s developments or numbers starting with the song "Change It, Don't Change It/Awkward Photo Shoot" only serves to supplement the uncomfortable, forced mood in the most unfortunate of ways. "A Way Back to Then" is the exact sort of mushy, heartfelt song that Jeff stops Hunter from singing...

...Baltimore, the House Republicans seemed hurt that the President wasn't listening to their "new" ideas. Unfortunately, most of these have the sophistication of policy seminars run by high school Libertarian clubs. One of their leading intellectual lights, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has offered a Medicare reform proposal that should kill any chance he has of winning higher office: he would privatize Medicare and deliver unto the elderly vouchers that would gradually lose much of their value. This would save a boatload of money, of course ... but one wonders whether the party that gave the world "death panels" would...
