...idea and execution here are adequate: chimps run a network on which they parody current TV shows and make fun of Hollywood. Just in case Ted Turner could resist talking chimps, the creators have the fake network run by a mean, stupid Australian mogul to mock Turner's rival, Rupert Murdoch. The real fear is that TBS's Turner might turn this show into an actual channel. Chimps all day may sound appealing, but you probably need some midgets and bikinied women to round out even 30 minutes of entertainment...

...with its own verbal dazzle and even more with the frailties of the clever folk at its heart. Adapter Parker, content to skate on the cool, hard surface of Wilde's wit, gets suave turns from Jeremy Northam (right) as the pol, Cate Blanchett (left) as his naive wife, Rupert Everett as a drawling best friend and Julianne Moore as the blackmailer. He also retains enough of Wilde's wit that you may want to reach for your Epigramamine. But the plot is trashed, the emotions trivialized into attitudes, the acting eventually music-hall broad. An ideal play is degraded...

...fecund is Andersen's satiric gift, and so broad his scope, that he almost incidentally sprays tiny rat-a-tat bullets at Alec Baldwin, Rupert Murdoch, Stephen Jay Gould, AIDS-awareness ribbons and the word lite. With a sweeter brand of malice, he takes direct (and hilarious) aim at Wall Street money-manager/pundit/provocateur (and TIME columnist) James J. Cramer, who is clearly the model for one of his more memorable characters...

Midsummer Night's magic does well by all the aging cast members, making Stanley Tucci and Rupert Everet's oft-displayed biceps taut and virile as they lounge about, toying with the fate of their younger coactors. Pfeiffer tops the pantheon, lathered up with glitter and seemingly enchanted by the budding potpourri in her hair...
