...island of Bali has always been a separate part of Indonesia. A Hindu province inside the biggest Muslim country in the world, a jet-setting resort inside a poor, rural nation - and a zone free of human cases of avian influenza in the nation that has recorded the most bird flu infections in the world. But Bali is bird flu free no longer. Today the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the death of a young Balinese woman from H5N1 avian flu, the second case on the island in less than a month. ...there's one big difference: unlike Bill Clinton, Abhisit didn't grow up in trailer-park country. Although the patrician Thai Democrat can count on support from the urban middle class, as well as residents of Thailand's largely Muslim south, Abhisit will have a tougher time convincing the rural masses that he feels their pain. Thailand's agrarian northeast, in particular, was the voting bloc that delivered a huge mandate to Prime Minister Thaksin in 2001, after he campaigned on an avowedly populist platform. ...glory. The biggest asset of India has always been its people. Even the emigrants scattered around the world share Indian citizens' patriotism and passion for their country. To live up to the world's expectations and confidence, India must now turn to the 80% of citizens who live in rural areas and for whom life has barely changed in the past half-century. They must contend daily with illiteracy, pollution, poor housing, and shortages of water and electricity. Political corruption needs to be addressed and the progress of rural people embraced before the nation can pull through to true superpower...
