...remarkable that their sibling ruse has been so effective on the coasts, but its no mystery why the White Stripes have attracted notice. Over their past two albums, they've built up a precociously large roster of simple, nigh-perfect tunes, from rave-ups redolent of mid-'60s rock ("You're Pretty Good Looking") to childlike love songs ("We're Going to be Friends.") ...also took a tough position, threatening to call off the talks if China refused to discuss returning the plane. That's also typical of negotiations with China, even business negotiations - playing the dash-to-the-airport ruse. Sometimes they literally sign agreements at the airport. They point to the equally naive proponents of all the New Economy hype who promised an end to the business cycle, growth and prosperity forever and a stock market that never went down...

...part of this outing at the darkest moment of the 36-day postelection battle with Al Gore is almost a country-boy ruse. Of course he wants us to see him here. This ranch, which he bought just a year ago, is a rich Texas symbol of achievement--what kids from the Midland dream of having. And it wasn't handed down. That ranch is all that he sees himself to be: rugged, real and thoroughly Texan. But Bush's persona at the ranch is also more than an act. He seems at peace in this place where he knows...
