...Waller: Senator Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat who has announced his support for the Ashcroft nomination, said yesterday that he and other moderates were willing to give Bush this one free pass - but if it's reciprocated by sending hard-right nominees for Senate confirmation to judicial posts, some of the moderate Democrats will fight back. If I had to guess, I'd say they might try to pick off a really conservative assistant AG candidate...

...think anyone was surprised that Daschle came out against Ashcroft - opposing this nomination has become a Democratic issue. It won't sink the nomination by any means, because there are enough Democrats who will vote for him. On the Senate Judiciary Committee, two Democrats are still hedging their bets: Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl, both of Wisconsin. Feingold called him a "respected public servant with a fine legal mind." New Jersey Democrat Bob Torricelli called him "a very good choice," praised his "sound judgment and high integrity...

Carnahan celebrated with the family left to her: daughter Robin, 39, and son Tom, 31, who may move to Washington to be near her. Son Russ, 42, was just then being sworn in to the Missouri house of representatives. All day, people cried as they came up to her. She held steady. Only when taking the oath did she fill up with tears, feeling her husband's presence "flood my soul. I had to push it aside...
