...techniques. Expect soups and stews that are a tangy mélange of dried fish, cabbage and pumpkin, supplemented by clams and grilled-whole local catches. Omelets come filled with radish and bamboo. Subtle spring onions from nearby Yilan county inform strips of salted pepper pork. It's good, rustic stuff, harking back to when Taiwan was a farming and fishing province, not a high-tech enclave enthralled by Japanese aesthetics and American doughnuts. It's also the perfect antidote to Taiwan's indigestibly deep-fried street food and its slavishly nostalgic showcases of other Chinese regional fare...

...First Family won't have that problem at Camp David, where the 150-seat Evergreen Chapel attracts a congregation of between 50 and 70 people most Sundays. The rustic stone-and-glass octagonal structure was built nearly two decades ago through private funds; President George H.W. Bush dedicated it in 1991. Lake Louise, Canada. Overlooking Alberta's Bow Lake and the glaciers beyond it, is Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, a rustic 26-room retreat with stone fireplaces and deer heads mounted on the log-cabin walls. The lodge, which is a two-and-half hour drive from Calgary, is my favorite cozy get-away-from-it-all hotel. No TVs here, just lots of hiking, board games by the fire, good food and fluffy beds to sink into after a long day. There's also a sauna hut out in the woods. Rates start at $215 per night including breakfast...
