...Moscow's ruthless attempt to suborn, subdue and subordinate this tiny, independent democracy is reminiscent of Stalin's times. The assault on Georgia is similar to what Stalin's Soviet Union did to Finland in 1939: in both cases, Moscow engaged in an arbitrary, brutal and irresponsible use of force to impose domination over a weaker, democratic neighbor. The question now is whether the global community can demonstrate to the Kremlin that there are costs for the blatant use of force on behalf of anachronistic imperialist goals...

...Under the New Paradigm, wiretapping Americans without a warrant and abusing detainees until they confessed to something became not only permissible but necessary. Indeed, ruthless, seemingly irrational enemies only responded to force, so force was what they deserved. Historical precedents, such as the successful “rapport-building” interrogations of Nazi war criminals or other countries’ experiences countering terrorism, proved irrelevant in such a new world. ...Russian cabal has been kidnapping women and using parts of their bodies to graft onto ailing comrades. (It's great to have the Russkies back as movie villains, since screenwriters were running out of ways to cartoonize the Arabs. Carter often portrayed Russians as cold, tough bad guys, ruthless and soulless.) Turns out the boss of the enterprise had been a child victim of Father Joe's. ...stock, making the taciturn Connecticut Yankee one of the richest men in the country. With Smith as the front man, the deal distances Malone from some of his fiercest critics. He had become increasingly fed up with politicians and competitors who accused him of building his empire through ruthless, anticompetitive practices. (As a Senator, Vice President Al Gore was quoted comparing Malone to Darth Vader.) But Malone's chief reason for merging may have been the simple realization that Bell Atlantic has the financial clout to help him build his cherished superhighway. For all of TCI's vaunted size...
