...this bulky recorder. I liked the Exact Rec feature, which automatically adjusts the recording quality to make sure a new show will fit onto a partially used disc. And the digital-video input and rudimentary onscreen-editing features are handy. But since the RW2U supports only the DVD-RW (rewritable) and DVDR formats, it lacks some of the advanced playback features on the Panasonic DMRs. On the other hand, since the RW format is more popular than the RAM format, the discs tend to be cheaper (about $4 each vs. $5 or more for a DVD-RAM), easier to find...
...enough of ripping (that is, copying a CD to their computer's hard drive) and burning (creating a new CD from scratch). In the U.S., last year saw a whopping 90% rise in the number of owners of computers with a drive that burns CDs (called a CD-RW drive, short for recordable/writable). A third of all PCs have one; 54% of new computers come with one installed. Half of CD-burner owners, reports Forrester Research, create at least one disc a month. Blank CD-Rs (discs on which you can record only once) bought in bulk cost as little...
Same goes for the new high-end G4 desktops Jobs also unveiled last week. They will contain what Apple has unimaginatively dubbed a SuperDrive. This is another industry first: a combined DVD-R (for recordable) and CD-RW (for rewritable) slot. What that means is, you will be able to record 60 minutes' worth of your own digital home movies and slide shows onto a disc that will play in any DVD machine (or 74 minutes' worth of digital music that will play on any CD machine). There's even a free piece of software called iDVD to help...
...piracy fears have kept real products out of the marketplace. Until now. Samsung's DVR-2000, which records onto DVD-RAM discs and plays regular DVD movies too, will go on sale in the U.S. in July for $2,000. Meanwhile, Pioneer is planning its own $2,400 DVD-RW version to come out sometime this fall...
...however, it started working. Go figure. Even more curious was that it took more than 20 minutes to install the program on my hard drive. When I used the original discs on a similar machine at work, it took less than five minutes. Why? It turns out that CD-RW discs use a less reflective material than CD-R discs, which makes them harder to read on older drives. Indeed, if your CD-ROM drive is more than a year old, it may not be able to read your CD-RW disc...
