Paul Rusesabagina, who was general manager of the Hotel des Milles Collines during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, delivered a stirring address to a full house last night at the First Parish Church. “That year, I learned how to deal with evil,” Rusesabagina said. Approximately 800,000 people were killed in 100 days during the genocide. Rusesabagina, who was made head of the Belgian-owned hotel soon after the genocide began, is seen as a hero for his role in guarding the 1,268 Tutsis and moderate Hutus who sought refuge at the hotel from...

...Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. military is too stretched to spearhead the effort. But the U.S. should still provide funding, intelligence, logistics, and even troops when possible. The U.S. and its European allies cannot wait any longer. The dark shadow of our failure to act on the eve of the Rwandan genocide, and the relative success of former President Bill Clinton’s Serbian campaign, lend further support to an interventionist agenda. Because of the ongoing genocide, Darfur must become a new theater of operations for our allies and ourselves. It is nothing short of a moral imperative...

...YOUR HUSBAND HAVE ALSO ADOPTED A RWANDAN ORPHAN. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? Well, we haven't officially adopted him. We work with refugees in London, and one day we met this wonderful Rwandan lad who was 15 at the time. He had been through some awful things. He's 19 now. I don't like nuclear families. I think it's very good to look beyond your tribe...

...Cheadle's performance notwithstanding, Hotel Rwanda ultimately fell back on the Schindler's-List template of one-good-man-against-the-world Hollywood uplift. April was unsparing, without being gratuitous, in showing how horrific yet casual the violence was, and Idris Elba (The Wire) was stunning as a Rwandan officer who came to see the light too late to save his mixed-ethnicity family. Equally important, this movie explored the important -- if sometimes impossible -- process of reconciliation and justice in present-day Rwanda. I doubt I could bear watching this movie a second time, but I'm grateful to have...

...Enhancing Agriculture in Rwanda through Linkages (pearl). One idea: create cooperatives whose farmers, 20% of whom are genocide widows or orphans, learn a multistep process for producing gourmet coffee that involves harvesting only the ripest beans and washing, sorting and drying them at new community washing stations. Ironically, Rwandans don't traditionally drink coffee. So importer Griswold took his customers to Rwanda to brew coffee with the farmers, showing them exactly the kind of taste and consistent quality the market is looking for. The farmers were taught to detect notes of blackberry, the consequences of improperly processing beans...
