...clock on a cold, neon-lit morning in New Jersey last Feb. 26 when a yellow Ryder rental van pulled into a Jersey City service station. A blue Honda sedan was right behind it. The attendants were more alert than usual at that hour because the station had recently been robbed. But these customers wanted only gas. The Honda's driver, a tall, red-haired, freckled man, paid for both vehicles with a $50 bill. A curious attendant tried to peer into the van. The driver, a younger, wiry man with a full beard, suddenly hopped out and planted himself...
Predictably enough, Newland ends up giving the liberal countess a lot more than just the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, he's engaged--and to Winona Ryder, no less! Winona plays the idiotic but socially savvy May Welland (a huge come-down from her kicky roles in "Heathers," "Beetle-juice," and "Edward Scissorshands...
...Lewis) is a true romantic gentleman. He is romantic because he wants to shrug off the opera cape of domestic respectability and follow his heart to hell with the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer). He is a gentleman because, having already declared his love to pretty May Welland (Winona Ryder), he is bound to behave honorably. He knows that when passion and propriety collide, only bitter defeat may rise from the wreckage...
...three stars (Day-Lewis superbly stooped by rectitude, Pfeiffer so elegant and bruised, Ryder a young Audrey Hepburn in all her wide-eyed guile) are swathed in glamorous costumes and period decor. The congestion of old masters on a matron's wall suggests the confined space in which the story unfolds and the straitened notions to which Newland and Ellen must pay homage. The handsomely fussy design is meant to dazzle and deaden the viewer's senses -- as Newland is seduced by Ellen and suffocated...
...just finished admonishing her husband not to fall for the bump-and- rob ploy when the yellow Ryder truck rammed them twice from behind. Keep driving, she told him. But none of it did any good. Ever since Hurricane Andrew lumbered through the area last year and ripped all the lightposts from the Dolphin Expressway, the section of road where the Rakebrands found themselves at 12:30 a.m. has been tar black at night. And perhaps it was this inky cover that encouraged a frustrated teenager to pull out a sawed-off rifle and blast a .30-cal. slug through...
