John Kenneth Gailbraith's??housekeeper never had a problem saying no. One day President Lyndon Johnson called the Galbraith house wanting to talk to the great economist, who had lain down for a little shut-eye. "He's taking a nap and has left strict orders not to be disturbed," said the housekeeper. Johnson replied, "Well, I'm the President. Wake him up." The response: "I'm sorry, Mr. President, but I work for Mr. Galbraith, not for you." Click...
Oddly enough, I found Joel Stein's??essay on horsemeat to be refreshing [Feb. 19]. I love horses and have been hoping for the passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention bill. It galled top GM officials that some of their EDS counterparts were making more money than they were. Finally, some GM units thought that EDS was charging the parent company too much...
...portrayal of Ford's??pardon of President Richard Nixon as a reflection that "mercy and healing" were very much on Ford's mind at the time. Far from an act designed to help a poor beleaguered President and heal this nation's wounds caused by the Watergate affair, the pardon was a calculated political move. The pardon blocked application of the rule of law to a President who committed criminal acts while in office and was intended to save Nixon and the Republican Party from further legal scrutiny. It will forever sully Ford's record as President...
