...Saddest of all the new drama series is Bracken's World (NBC), a sort of Peyton Place set in a movie lot that ABC had the sense to reject in 1963 and CBS gave up on in 1965. Bracken, a Howard Hughes-like studio chief, is never seen, and the day-to-day operation of the studio is handled by his executive secretary (Eleanor Parker). All told, the series includes eleven running parts and more cliches per foot than any other film in memory. Among them: a young contract player who comes on as a kind of poor...
Father Conroy is that saddest of all alienated creatures, a man half in step with his times. Both as a man of God and a man of Ireland, he lacks vocation. He has little use for the fuddy-duddy reactionaries of Irish Catholicism, but he is almost equally unsympathetic to the new-style, gogo, golf-club-toting young priests buoyed up by their faith in sociology. Outside of the church, Father Conroy hardly knows which to despair of more-the ignorant Irish peasants whom he loves, or the smooth, gray-suited men of the future whom he fears justly...

Instead, residents are treated like clean socks, rolled up and tucked into gigantic bureau drawers. Wasted muscle. The saddest thing about Co-Op City is that its bleak environment was achieved at great public cost. Only governmental assistance can put good housing within the grasp of big-city dwellers who earn an average of $7.500 a year, not to mention the poor. At Co-Op City, state and city governments...
...Saddest of all, perhaps, an unidentified vandal slipped into the Met's European-paintings gallery and scratched a small H into the corners of ten paintings (none was seriously damaged). "An act by a very sick individual," said Hoving. He was hardly fazed, however, by the complaints about the show. "From time to time, a great institution must do something highly experimental," he observed. "It is necessary to keep alive and thinking...
...saddest thing about the ruckus raised by Tommie Smith and John Carlos was that it dulled the lustre of a superlative track and field meet in which the U.S. once again demonstrated that it is the world's best. The Star-Spangled Banner was played so often that it began to sound like The Stars and Stripes Forever...
