The American Bar Association Journal this month cited a case in which a defense lawyer insisted that indulging in pornography was a form of intoxication -- and thus reason to mitigate the sentence an Indiana man received for rape and murder. His client suffered from sexual sadism because of pornography, rendering him unable to gauge the wrongfulness of his conduct. Another lawyer in Milwaukee coined "cultural psychosis" to explain why an inner-city teenager killed another for her leather coat. ...goal of many a modern mystery writer to merge sadism with sociology. If you unleash a serial killer to prey on the young and vulnerable, you'd better add something -- a sermon about society's ills, keen human insight -- so that your movie (The Silence of the Lambs), novel (The Alienist) or TV series doesn't appear irredeemably sordid. In Under Siege, by far the snazziest of Seagal's films, he got to smash Tommy Lee Jones' head through a computer screen. Faced with a bunch of thugs in Hard to Kill, he used his fatal grace to dispatch all but the gang leader, then tossed his weapon aside to give the gun-toting goon a sporting chance. Talk about your Zen machismo...
