...lago of this interlude is a cadet officer named Jocko De Paris (Ben Gazzara), a rising young sadist who has already learned that it is not enough to torture people-the real satisfaction comes when they can be made to beg for it. By an intricate series of Machiavellian maneuvers, De Paris involves four cadets, who think the whole sinister business is an almost innocent practical joke, in a plot. The idea is to siphon a mort of whisky through an enema nozzle into a fifth cadet and deposit his senseless body on the quadrangle one dark night. Next morning...

...main parts are sharply routed out, particularly by Mark Rydell as the drooling little sadist who gets a perverted kick out of violence, and by Actor Cassavetes, who looks as if his name were Marlon Sinatra. The script, however, is stagy and sometimes dawdling, and when the picture is over, the customer will probably realize that he has not really experienced what life in the slums is like. ...prove almost everywhere as good as their material. Joe Mantell is the living image of a lamppost primitive. Betsy Blair is fully convincing as the sort of plain Jane whose homeliness is only skin-deep. Ernest Borgnine as Marty lives up to all the promise he showed as the sadist in From Here to Eternity, and at the same time brilliantly shatters the type-cast he molded for himself in that picture. His Marty is fully what the author intended him to be-a Hamlet of butchers...

Appearing in a Swiss court for a divorce hearing, glamorous Socialite Joanne Connelly Sweeny Patiño, 23, told a sympathetic judge that her husband, Bolivian Tin Heir Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, was "a real sadist, who often beat me." Matter of fact, complained Joanne without further explanation, things really got rough on the Isle of Capri: "On our honeymoon he beat me so much I had a miscarriage...
