...Last Stander Chang's army of 50,000 was put to absolute rout by Nationalist & Mohammedan General Pai Chung-hsi, who took 20,000 prisoners, and barely missed capturing Polygamist Chang as he fled to Manchuria. Rejoicing was general, for Chang Tsung-chang is brutal, a thief, a sadist who loves to lash his prisoners, an old-woman-beater and a young-woman-despoiler, a murderer, treacherous, outrageous, godless (TIME, March 7, 1927). But, as Columnist Brisbane remarked, Chang Tsung-chang has "verve"; and 20 wives and concubines have not rendered him "anemic." As such he looms a potent...

...wheat pit-to the virtual exclusion of the minor traits and actions by which an individual emerges from a type. The degeneracy of Daniel Pardway's issue-Gene into "a lout among gentleman, a gentleman among louts;" Bert into a floorwalker and window-dresser; Phoebe into a dreamy sadist, via sex-starvation; Freddie into a Princeton fop, proud wastrel and frayed dope fiend-seems mechanical, arbitrary. Sadist!"* But even Frenchmen expressed preference for open antagonism to concealed indifference. At home, people watched Mr. Kellogg wait, recalled that there is nothing in the Constitution to keep Mr. Borah from occupying both his own Senatorial chair and the Secretary of State's seat. If the President would select...

...Avenir declared: "Borah hates France with a sort of sadic frenzy." One is a sadist who takes pleasure, ipso facto, in inflicting pain. * Last week John Allen Sickel, Manhattan caviar dealer, bet his wife that he could name all the state capitals in the U. S. He won. Curious newspapermen wondered how many other citizens could duplicate Mr. Sickel's feat. TIME readers desirous this week of making bets similar to Mr. Sickel's may settle their bets by consulting p. 9, where all state capitals are listed...

...this story about high and low brownskins in Harlem and Atlantic City he shows Negroes wallowing in extreme depravity. He makes the comparatively chaste, intelligent heroine most unhappy. The hero, an ambitious graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, is discouraged, disillusioned, thoroughly seduced and debauched by a saffron sadist who curses her race tor its jealousy of "rising" members and its hypocritical renunciation ot "nigger" instincts. There is no health in the book, no humor. There is feverish color, hot animalism, degradation. Whether he has told the truth or not-and the glossary appended shows that he at least knows...
