More amazing than President Bush's decision to intervene in the Middle East is his prior lack of involvement [WORLD, March 25]. It is sad that Bush decided to act because of his plans to force a showdown with Iraq. He should have been sitting at the negotiating table from the first day of his presidency. A hands-off approach to Israel and the Palestinians gets us nowhere. Peace can be achieved only through negotiations. BRANDON NIGHTINGALE Lawrence, Kans...

...Center's supporters plunged Baker and his institution into a long, ugly drama of accusations and recriminations so far-reaching that they ended up sullying the ideals of all of American alternative spirituality. By narrative's end, Baker is in many ways scarcely distinguishable from the long, sad list of other modern con men-cum-spiritual masters who started out well-intentioned but became damagingly seduced by the prestige and power that their legitimate abilities had earned for them...

Cornel West’s decision is indeed sad for Harvard, but over the past few years I have watched most of my favorite women professors leave with a lot less fanfare and a far smaller outcry. Where was the series of front-page stories for Juliet Schor, an internationally-known economist who was beloved by her students, when she left for Boston College last year? Seyla Benhabib, one of the top feminist theorists in the country, defected to Yale, while other important and influential women were denied tenure or elected to depart upon seeing how low their chances were...

Dynegy ended up passing on the Enron sale, but only because of the diligence of Dynegy’s own investment bankers in discovering the sad state of Enron’s finances. Enron declared bankruptcy soon after. Had Rubin’s alleged call to Moody’s been successful and led to the sale of Enron to Dynegy, Citigroup (together with J.P. Morgan, the other investment bank involved) would have made $90 million and Dynegy’s shareholders would have been stuck with Enron’s debts. If these allegations are proved true, Rubin will...

Berlin is a city suffused with history, a lot of it sad. So it's gratifying to find a part of the metropolis that, though ruined by war and its aftermath, is now flourishing. In the last few years, Berlin's Mitte district, for three decades the cold war frontier between east and west, has been reborn as one of the city's trendiest shopping and dining areas. It's also where the politically powerful in Germany can be found conducting the country's business over a milchkaffee or a Wiener schnitzel...
