FORTUNE AND MEN'S EYES is a revival of the 1967 prison drama, restaged by Hollywood Actor Sal Mineo in a version calculated to fill what he must feel is a sado-masochism gap. Filled with the sight and sound of faces being beaten bloody on the shower floor, genitals being punched, bodies being raped, slugged, thrown and twisted in agony, this latest entry to homosexual theater is a carefully placed kick in the groin...

...more profound crisis is the lack of a commanding dramatist with a compelling vision. Half of today's plays seem to be written in some dusty attic of the past and the other half in some apocalyptic junkyard of the future. The shock fads of homosexual, lesbian and sado-masochistic themes, the vogue of nudity and participatory theater may well continue, but they cannot mask the lack of substance. They are frames without pictures, devices without a purposeful direction. This is a theater that is severely pinched for both means and ends, but at least it has a hope...

It would still cost the industry too much -in ratings and program-development expenses-to beat all the swords into ploughshares. ABC's The Avengers is a festival of sado-masochism and murder (according to a Christian Science Monitor survey, the series averaged a violent incident every 31 minutes). It will undoubtedly go off after this season, but not necessarily because it is the most violent show on the air. A likelier reason: the violence it does to the network...

...that laws carefully and narrowly aimed at creating a ban for juveniles might well be constitutional. Taking the hint, New York State passed a statute in 1965 making it a crime to sell to anyone under 17 any material that presents a salacious view of "nudity, sexual conduct or sado-masochistic abuse." Similarly inspired, Dallas enacted a municipal ordinance empowering a nine-man board to label films as "not suitable for young persons"; movie theaters can be fined $200 for admitting anyone under 16 to such a film unless he is accompanied by a parent or spouse...
