Perhaps these movies are not as self-consciously conscientious as Gandhi, but they were what pleased Americans the most this year. Where are the Gandhi dolls? And you have to admit that the saga of the Mahatma was a little long. In short, while Gandhi was certainly an excellent movie, and deserved to win some top honors including, perhaps, best picture, its winning eight of a possible 11 trophies casts doubt on the motives of the Academy...

Goldman and Fuller first told Charlie Company's saga in an excellent 1981 Newsweek cover story, the longest in the weekly's history. There, they explored the men a harrowing exploits in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 and their subsequent cold homecoming. Charlie Company the book is an expansion of that effort Eleven more members of the original company of 120 have resurfaced. No wonder all the mums liked it. Anyway, one of the networks here, ABC, made a saga about it, the word for anything ten hours long and slow as a stunned mullet. They say (well, they hope) the Yanks are going to watch it in their millions. Which just shows there's probably no limit to the number of poor suffering drongos...
