Brooks' steady direction never allows the two-hour-plus movie to sag. The love story between Melvin and Carol plays itself out with plenty of small comedic surprises, courtesy of a script that keeps the story from getting predictable. The strength of the main characters makes a few of the movie's contrivances--like sending Melvin, Carol and Simon on a car trip to Baltimore just to get them all in one location--easily forgivable...

...first time in ages, gives a remarkably understated performance as Rudy's counselor. His subtle enthusiasm and energy makes his character the most likeable in the film. In fact, whenever he is absent from the screen (far too often), the other performances (and the film) begin to sag. Claire Danes gives a strong performance as a battered wife, transcending the underwritten role by adding shades of complexity to her strong-willed character...

Twelve hours later, with midnight fast approaching, Alley and the cast are still on Stage 25 finishing up Episode No. 5, in which her top executive, Olive (Kathy Najimy), persuades Ronnie to be a role model for a new anatomically correct doll (its breasts sag, and its butt protrudes). By this time, everybody is getting punch-drunk tired. Alley starts singing "I am woman, I am role model, I am whore." No one seems to notice. She smiles. She's happy, really happy, to be back...
