Seiji Tsutsumi, 61, is the dapper, soft-spoken head of the Seibu Saison Group (1987 sales: $28 billion), a conglomerate of department stores, supermarkets and service organizations. Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, 54, square jawed and hard driving, owns the Seibu Railway group, which operates $400 billion worth of railways, hotels, golf courses and ski resorts. The two are half brothers and have long been locked in intense competition. Last fall the conflict broke into the open when Seiji's Seibu Saison Group acquired the Inter-Continental hotel chain for nearly $2.2 billion, a challenge to Yoshiaki's hotel domain...
...brothers do seem to see their futures in the same arena: the rapidly expanding leisure industry. Seiji's Seibu Saison Group is branching out into hotels and what he calls the "comprehensive life-style" business. He wants customers at his stores to be able to buy a traveling bag, put it to use by booking a package tour, and take out a loan to pay for the journey. Yoshiaki has his own growth plans: he is looking at the expanding market in cable television and optical-fiber communications, in addition to more familiar resort-development projects at home and abroad...
April, la saison des amours for wild life in France, inevitably brings out the bird watchers. Last week one of the oddest sights in the fields and forests was a stocky, monkish fellow in a Basque beret and rimless glasses, cocking an ear to all the amorous twittering, and furiously scribbling music on manuscript paper clipped to a board. It was French Composer Olivier Messiaen, 58, elder statesman of the far-out realm of 20th century music, gathering new themes for his compositions. "Birds are the greatest musicians," he insists. "You will never find in their song a mistake...
...night life in the tripper traps of old Montmartre. The landscape painters were busy by day on the Seine bridges, and Josephine Baker, the oft-warmed-over toast of gay Paree, was going through 32 costume changes a night at the Folies Bergeres. The grande saison de Paris would offer 150 spectacles, from colored lighting displays of the Versailles fountains to an amateur night for drink-mixers at the Hotel Continental. France was also pleased to announce that even the trains were running on time. One day last week, for the first time since the war, every train...
Between 15 and 19, Arthur Rimbaud wrote poetry whose slashing irony and pure music still influence poets. At 19 he wrote Une Saison en Enfer (A Season in Hell), an obscure, agonized hodgepodge in which Rimbaud addicts* trace the wrestlings of his André Gide-like puritanism with his André Gide-like passions. But from then until he died, at 37, in a Marseille hospital, Arthur Rimbaud never wrote again. This amazing break with his genius, his lone-wolf prowlings through the lower depths of Europe, his gunrunning in Africa and Asia form a vague, provoking literary legend...
