...best proof, perhaps, of the old adage: "A good salesman can sell anything,'' is Robert Anderson Magowan, 55. A lean, fast-moving salesman's salesman, he ran one of the biggest sales departments for Macy's, the world's biggest store, became the star salesman of the biggest brokerage house; and now, as president and chairman of Safeway, the world's second biggest grocery chain, he has more than doubled the chain's profits in three years...
...Magowan lives as every salesman would like to. He has five houses across the U.S., ventures forth from his great whitestone house (eight bedrooms) overlooking San Francisco Bay for quick trips to his Spanish-style beach house in Southampton, L.I. (swimming pool and tennis court), his five-story town house in Manhattan (East 69th Street), or his pink Palm Beach house. (Magowan rents another Southampton house to Mrs. Cyrus McCormick.) With his pretty wife Doris, he moves through the top echelons of San Francisco's moneyed, operagoing society, is a trustee of Grace Episcopal Cathedral. He plays bridge...
Hingle (as J.B.), Raymond Massey as Mr. Zuss (the balloon salesman who plays God), Nan Martin as J.B.'s wife, and Christopher Plummer as Nickels (the popcorn vendor who portrays Satan) are all excellent. Boris Aronson's set is magnificent; Miss Ballard's costumes catch the proper blend of the gaudy and grotesque; David Amram's music and Tharon Musser's lighting lend almost surrealistic overtones to the drama. And Kazan ringmasters his menagerie with the genius which has earned him his reputation...

The leader of the farm revolt was Benito Nardone, 52, a radio personality with a big rural following. Years ago, Montevideo-born Nardone, stevedore, union organizer, newsman and backlands traveling salesman, sat in Congress as a Colorado. He quit in disgust when told to confine himself to drawing his pay and keeping his mouth shut. Taking to the air in 1942, gossipy Benito Nardone set out to woo the farmers, got their rapt attention by giving weather and crop information, advising farm...
...voice is pure club-car American, rumbling through bourbon and cigar smoke, shaking with hoarse laughter. It sounds like a man imitating what he once feared he might become: a fat-ribbed salesman for his papa's turbine plant. Rumbles James Gilmore Backus: "I left Cleveland to get away from His and Her towels, people who call cocktail parties 'pours' and the guy who always breaks it up by wearing a lampshade on his head...
