...Perot's candidacy was almost entirely self-financed allowed him to claim he was "owned" by no one but his followers. It turned out there just weren't enough of them to bring him even close to the victory he kept promising. If he had been just another computer salesman from Dallas with a 1930s haircut and a nasal twang, he probably would never have got his name on the ballot, let alone been admitted to the inner circle of candidates. His money -- plus his record as a can-do entrepreneur -- gained him that much. But it's doubtful, given...
...ROSS PEROT IS ELECTED PRESIDENT, IT WILL NOT BE the first time people buy something they don't need. A slick salesman's perfected pitch often trumps good judgment, and if a peddler lives who rivals Perot, he exists only in fiction. To an electorate eager for one thing above all others -- leadership of clear purpose, candidly proclaimed -- Perot seems a welcome breath of fresh air. With the penetrating clarity common to the slightly deranged, and with an air of bustling purposiveness, Perot has about him a kind of gravitas that appears to transmute political banalities into profound insights. He worked as a dishwasher, shoe salesman and milkman in Little Havana while editing an anti-Castro paper funded by Jose Bosch, the Bacardi rum magnate. Mas signed on with the aborted 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion and once tried to outfit a B-26 aircraft with bombs to hit Cuba's oil refineries...
...other characters in "Glengarry Glen Ross" make it easy for Pacino to be bad: Jack Lemmon fills the role of Shelly Levene, an overworked, unconfident shadow of a "great" salesman ten years past his prime. Lemmon simpers and croons to customers, selling his soul to regain an irretrievable glory. In the end, he makes a good feast for Roma when the sleazy real estate sales company that puts a roof over both their heads crucifies...
...course, because "Glengarry Glen Ross" takes place in New York, it usually rains in torrents and the movie takes us clear to the underside of contemporary life like nothing since "Death of a Salesman." Unfortunately, another painful parallel to "Salesman" is that the film uses only a fraction of the potential that the medium bestows upon it. The scenes are limited and we rarely see any kind of action other than frustrated rampages and darkly philosophical dialogues...
