When tourism hits a lull during the fall months, the American and European tourists who are there cannot walk a spleef's length without attracting some sort of attention from the locals. It is often hard to distinguish friendliness from salesmanship among Jamaicans, which can be off-putting--nearly every conversation leads to a proposition to buy somethings: hair braids, motor scooters, marijuana, mushroom tea, ecstasy, heroin, cocaine, or crack. But even if it seems like the Jamaican local is aiming to grab that $20 bill pasted on each tourist's forehead, these dealers are nothing to be afraid...
...fair that the Diva Divine makes albums only as vacations from movies and motherhood, for her genius is as a singer-entertainer. Midler's vocal voltage and pristine song salesmanship are on display here in tunes by Leonard Cohen, Chuckii Booker, Carole King, Ben Folds--lots of fine folk. Her voice can ache with hard-won wisdom (on the first single, My One True Friend) or smile with the sweet clarity of her Honolulu youth (Gus Kahn's 1925 Ukulele Lady). Songs like Laughing Matters, I'm Beautiful and I'm Hip give the album the sassy intimacy...
...Saturn conflict is a case study in GM's mounting woes. Perhaps the company's most notable success in the 1990s, the mid-priced, compact Saturns were sold with a revolutionary no-pressure style of salesmanship. Saturn has won high praise for winning consumers away from the likes of popular Toyota and Honda. Trouble is, corporate infighting over resources has prevented GM from upgrading Saturn's basic design or adding a new model since the station wagon was introduced in 1992. Worse yet, other GM divisions pump out small cars to compete with Saturn...
...Yorker, she is indisputably the greatest buzz generator in the history of American publishing, author of the notion that a magazine must be talked about and not just read. Her new partner is himself no slouch in this regard: Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of Miramax Films, whose gift for salesmanship has helped generate 110 Academy Award nominations and 30 actual Oscars over the past decade for his company's generally ambitious movies (which include the likes of The Piano, Pulp Fiction and Good Will Hunting, as well as Scream). The third member of what Weinstein refers to, perhaps inevitably...
Here's how the world has turned: the new movie version of Lolita is at this moment playing without any particular controversy in Moscow, former capital of hopelessly square Soviet socialist morality. After something like a year of relentless salesmanship, producers of Adrian Lyne's near reverent (but by no means inept or exploitative) adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's modernist classic has yet to find a theatrical distributor in the U.S., where, of course, morally ambivalent entanglements between older men and younger women have lately been hot news...
