Members of some 2 million U.S. families are allergic to cats. Feline saliva contains the offending substance, a protein called Fel d1 (for Felis domesticus 1) that is left on the fur and skin during preening, a full-time preoccupation of most cats. Generations of American G.I.s have worn dog tags as a grim reminder that the U.S. military might someday need to identify their remains. But the Pentagon has now authorized a superior DNA-identification system, for which it will collect blood and saliva samples from all service personnel.
