Much of Aquino's time, however, was taken up trying to trace the Marcos fortune. Jovito Salonga, head of the Good Government Commission, charged with recouping Marcos' hidden wealth, has estimated the deposed leader's assets at between $5 billion and $10 billion. Some $800 million is located in a Swiss bank account. Approximately $350 million more is apparently tied up in five New York properties, including Manhattan's Crown Building and Lindenmere, a Long Island estate. His strongest challenger for the presidential nomination will probably be Liberal Party Leader Salonga, a center-leftist with strong nationalist leanings. Salonga, however, is blind in one eye, deaf in one ear and carries 100 pieces of shrapnel in his body as the result of a political bombing in 1971. Along with those debilitating injuries, he is a Protestant in a predominantly Roman Catholic...

...that there were many left out of the American Dream. Hwang is more respectful of the old characters too: the sexy nightclub singer Linda Low (Sandra Allen) was a conniving man eater in the old show; now she's a warm, sisterly and surprisingly full-blooded character. And if Salonga's stolidity as Mei-Li gets to be a little monotonous, she's the calm center of a show that is always entertaining and frequently affecting...
