Then came the astonishing vote. The technical scores for the Canadians were all high, but the scores for presentation favored the Russians, 5-2 (with two tie votes), with the French vote in their camp. Sale and Pelletier looked briefly stunned. The crowd of some 16,000 at the Salt Lake Ice Center exploded in boos. The possibility of a judge's deal was in the air immediately. The Russians were eager to sustain a long tradition of winning the gold medal for pairs skating--10 Olympic Games in a row. The French wanted just as badly to win gold...

...recent existence has been indelibly pressed into Olympic lore. Thanks to breathless press coverage, we have even learned how they take their coffee (he likes a latte, she, a latte with vanilla syrup). Less known is the back story of how they found each other and made it to Salt Lake City. It begins a continent and several worlds away. Sale grew up in the western province of Alberta, strapped on her first pair of skates before her second birthday and at age 8 announced to her mother that she was Olympic material; Pelletier played hockey in a small town...

Last week's debate in Salt Lake City once again stirs all of these feelings. I know Yelena [Berezhnaya] and Anton [Sikharulidze]--we've toured together--and they are great skaters. I feel sad for them as well as for Jamie [Sale] and David [Pelletier], sad that their big moment was lost amid yet another judging dispute. So, watching it on television, I was both surprised and not surprised when Jamie and David were given the silver. I thought: "Here...

...spotlight, and I know how uncomfortable it is to have cameras following your every move. Jamie and David have handled themselves with the greatest of dignity in a tough situation, and I commend them for that. But just as in 1994, what has happened in Salt Lake City is not fair to the other athletes, whose accomplishments have taken a backseat. That's a loss for everyone. These Games began as a celebration of humanity and our ability to unite the world. Let's get back to the Games and share in the pride of these great athletes...

...official announcement that cheating has been added to the schedule of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games is being widely applauded as an ingenious gambit that instantly renders the current Canadian-Russian skating brouhaha, indeed all Games-related scandals, moot. Slimy and underhanded representatives of prestige-crazed nations the world over are ecstatic. "I salute the Olympic Committee for at long last granting chicanery its rightful place in amateur athletics," stated one behind-the-scenes manipulator, using a false identity. "No longer must we hide our handiwork in the shadows, only to be hauled before this or that tribunal...
