Begging for Jobs. Between April and last month, 500,000 peasants were sent back to their villages. In one month, 35,000 pedicab and rickshaw men "volunteered" to migrate to northern Kiangsu; in one day 4,000 sampan dwellers left for inland cities. The government press reported proudly that 80% of the city's university students and flocks of physicians were begging for frontier jobs...
Boat whistles shrieked, gongs clanged, and bunting fluttered from every sampan as the LSTs bearing 14.000 Chinese P.W.s from Korea nosed into the gaily decorated pier. Flag-waving thousands lined the 20-mile route to Taipei; firecrackers were so thick that the prisoners waving from their trucks were often hidden in haze. Premier Chen Cheng proclaimed "the advent of doomsday" for Communist China's rulers, and posters urged ACCELERATE PREPARATIONS FOR COUNTERATTACK...
Jane sings One for My Baby in a gold gown, You Kill Me in a white, off-the-shoulder number, and clinches with Mitch-urn on a sampan, a yacht and a bed. Along the road from the river to Phat Diem town, a group of young cyclists waited to greet the returning bishop. He had been away only four days, but the people seemed genuinely moved and excited in welcoming him back. Some...
...weeks past, the news of his coming had been heard amidst the clatter of traffic on Bangkok's twisted, crowded streets. Peddlers had passed it from sampan to sampan along the winding, traffic-jammed klong (canals) that made Siam's capital an eastern Venice. Strawhatted boatmen on the wider canals that crisscross the rice-rich central plains to the north had told it to farmers' wives in houses perched on stilts. Up the great rivers, the Chao Phraya, the Mekong, the Tha Chin, the Ping, the Si and the Mun, it had gone with wandering merchants thumbing...
