...represents the first comprehensive collection of those celebrated live performances. Needless to say, the compilation is simply glorious. Vaughan was as adept at funneling rip-roaring blues through his guitar as he was pulling out smouldering riffs from its strings, and the first Montreux outing provides a brilliant sampler of his stunning—if then still raw—talent...

...traditional four or five piece band, Slipknot are a nine-man unit comprised of two guitarists, one drummer, two “custom percussionists” (who bash kegs, tin drums and each other at various points), a bassist, a DJ, a sampler and a vocalist. The result of this strange amalgamation of participants is that one moment the guitars are muted and pulsing, vocals slickly rapped over with a mild hip-hop scratching, and the next a double bass drum is rumbling, the guitars are screeching, and the lead vocalist is screaming as if his lungs were on fire...

...huge wooden bar beckons from the center of the pub like a lighthouse in the fog. Amidst the fog, a sampler (four beers for $4.50) might not be the right choice, but picking one of the 24 options could make your head spin (if the alcohol isn’t doing the trick already). In other words, a nice, bipartisan, practically triangulatory sampler of things like extended unemployment insurance (very popular with the Democrats), sending out rebate checks to poor non-taxpayers (also a Democratic suggestion - cutting payroll taxes is a possibility too) and just enough corporate tax breaks to keep the business lobby off the ledge and Dick Armey from bolting to the Libertarians...

...potty-mouthed lyrics didn't keep Slipknot's eponymous major-label debut from going platinum. In addition to courting publicity by defecating onstage and engaging in mild acts of violence with concertgoers, Slipknot has catered to rap-metal fans by mixing turntables and a sampler into its burlesque of drums and distorted guitar. Cannier still is the band's use of costumes at a time when metal is dominated by average dudes in sweatshirts. The band's macabre looks, like its hyperbolic lyrics, suggest the teenage alienation it sings about is a horror on par with the evils depicted...
