PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM. Woody Allen is the hero of his own play about a neurotic young man, rejected by girls even in his dreams, who is finally coached into bed with his best friend's wife by his fantasy hero, Humphrey Bogart...
When he was seeking his first term in 1961, Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty insisted that "to ensure healthy democratic processes" and thwart any "self-interest group that feeds on continued control of city hall," eight years in the mayor's office should be the limit. That argument helped Sam to defeat a two-term incumbent. However, after eight years in city hall, he decided that they were scarcely sufficient after...
Scandal and Absenteeism. It was the state of Sam Yorty's city hall that caught up with him. His second term was tainted by scandals, including indictments of five Yorty-appointed city commissioners on charges of bribery or criminal conflict of interest. (Three were convicted, two await trial.) Angelenos were unhappy with the mayor's frequent absences visited more than a dozen foreign countries-while the nation's third city (pop. 2,800,000) was wracked by crises. Los Angeles Negroes (18% of the voters) united against Yorty for his failure to grapple with racial issues that...
...BESET by a crop of western about extremely competent people. In Sam Whiskey, a dreary little film which proceeds shakily on the mistaken assumption that the audience is interested in what's going on, the title character engineers and executes a gold heist--crushing his adversaries and winding up in a clinch with Angie Dickinson. Along the way, he meets with no serious obstacles. In Support Your Local Sheriff, a food picture by Burt Kennedy, James Garner cleans up the town and wins the girl with computer-like dispatch, supremely faster, smarter, and better looking then anyone--and well aware...
...should be noted that Kennedy's film purports to be a comedy and consequently makes much of its hero's uncanny superiority. On the other hand, Sam Whiskey simply lies, since its hero, played by someone named Burt Reynolds, is plainly incapable of doing anything competently and is indeed fortunate to have a director and a writer (their names elude me) who want to pretend that he can. Mr. Reynolds, who was probably in a TV show once, plays as if he were trying to become a child star, and Sam Whiskey is distinguished only by the quiet talents...
