Building a stable peace on the agreement will not be easy. "It's not a done deal," reports Sam Allis in Jerusalem. "For the Israelis, the debate next week in the Knesset will be critical. Many in the Likud believe they can rewrite the rules allowing Israeli forces to go wherever they want. As for Arafat, he continues to make the Likud's job vastly easier with his inflammatory rhetoric to his own people. He continues to call for jihad, for the retaking of Jerusalem. Utterly absent is a new vocabulary aimed at creating a different image of the Israelis...
...leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin are trying to persuade their respective governments to accept the peace plan they signed Sunday evening, just hours before the onset of the Rosh Hoshanah holiday. It won't be easy. Sam Allis reports from Jerusalem that a fractious debate is expected when the Israeli parliament meets Wednesday: "Benjamin Netanyahu, the opposition leader, is very unhappy with the deal and he could stir up a lot of trouble among the conservatives." Worse, Allis says, the Israeli government fears a violent reaction from radicals in both camps. "Hamas is expected...
...flight attendant hijacked an Iranian jetliner with more than 170 people aboard after it took off from Tehran, then forced it to land at an Israeli air force base. Sam Allis, in Jerusalem, reports that the hijacker first sought political asylum in the U.S., then asked for asylum in Israel. He surrendered about an hour after the plane landed at Ovda Airforce Base in Israel's southern Negev Desert. (Jordan and Saudi Arabia both refused the hijacker's requests to land in those countries.) Allis says the man was also turned down at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv...
...Israeli settler trying to take down a Palestinian flag in an Arab elementary school set off a violent clash today between Palestinians and Israelis in Hebron. "This is a scary and mean situation right now," reports Sam Allis from Jerusalem. "The Israeli government's hands are virtually tied. They can't get the settlers out of Hebron voluntarily, and it would be political suicide to force them out. Hebron is holding up the peace talks." Today's violence came on the second anniversary of the Israeli-PLO accord, signed in Oslo in 1993. Hebron is the main obstacle between Israel...
...idea of creating a major museum dedicated to rock music is a relatively recent one. In 1983 a group of record-industry professionals founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to honor musical greats; the first inductees (including Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke and Chuck Berry) were selected in January 1986. But even as the selections were made and the institution's first all-star jam held, the hall had no actual residence. In May 1986 the Hall of Fame board, after considering such sites as New York City and Memphis, Tennessee, decided to locate in Cleveland. Ostensibly, the city...
