...literature, the authors do in fact treat it as the central spiritual experience in the lives of the Hebrews, and later, in the lives of Christians. Jewish critics will be mollified by the rich Jewishness of the commentary. Rabbinical interpretations are frequent; renowned authorities like Rabbis Hillel, Gamaliel and Samson Raphael Hirsch are quoted. The Hebrews' escape from Egypt leads to a description of the Passover Seder, and the appearance of the young Jesus in the Temple is used to discuss the ceremony of Bar Mitzvah (a phrase, Christians will be interested to learn, which means...
...point about contained energy. But, mercifully, the columns are much shorter than the originals. The sculpture's modeling is calligraphic rather than realistic, and they take on new power to modern eyes conditioned to depreciate the technical skills of representation in favor of the purer visions of stylization. Samson grappling with the lion, an llth century capital from Avignon's Notre Dame des Doms, contains within its stylized forms both the violence of the struggle and the authority of an abstraction. Its companion piece, representing Samson pulling down the temple on his head as six Philistine heads loom...
Last night we reached Palma, Majorca, where the special attraction was a twelve-mile trip to the monastery at Valldemosa to eat a buffet dinner and hear a recital of Chopin's piano music by that handsome Frenchman Samson François. In the classic story of good man led astray, DeMille pays little attention to the seduced here, concentrating instead on Delilah's lust for Samson. From her first appearance, as the kid sister of Samson's beloved, she is obviously excited by Samson's body, and her reaction to his outwrestling a lion is explicitly sexual. DeMille tentatively suggests Delilah's role as emasculating bitch (at one point she turns Samson into a docile houseboy), but ultimately backs away from this idea...
Angela Lansbury executes the thankless role of Delilah's spear-wielding sister, looking like a porcelain Valkyrie and apparently regarding with doubt her future as a blonde bombshell. Victor Mature, who plays Samson, is quite fat and quite bad, but he pulls down a wicked temple...
