When the House of Representatives set up a special committee to investigate subversive propaganda, in May of 1938, about the only complaint came from Fritz Kuhn, leader of the rambunctious German-American Bund. Kuhn charged that the man who mid-wived the new group, Representative Samuel Dickstein of New York, was engaged in unfair persecution of the Bund. Indeed, Dickstein had been attacking the Bund furiously.
