...swipes at the lost art of satire, and both flop for the same reasons. Felicia Lamport's "By Henry James Cozened" begins with a light touch, lapses into gray elaboration, and drags on to repetitive dreariness. Maura Cavanaugh (a Radcliffe History major) embarks on a twenty page slash of Samuel Beckett in a vindictive farce called "Waiting for God." Both satires lack any self-substance beyond the parody. Both blunder on after the comic veneer has worn thin enough to recognize their paucity. And both conveniently ignore or unhappily miss a good deal of their victims' subtleties...

Both the Russians (with buttoned lips) and the U.S. (with considerable public discussion) are preparing to probe the moon. Lieut. General Samuel E. Anderson declared last week (and was sternly shushed by the Pentagon) that the Air Force will fly three lunar probes this year, in August, September and October. It became a hot political issue in last year's mayoralty race, apparently won a stay of execution when Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tedesco won on a save-the-mansion ticket, was doomed again by Winner Tedesco when backers failed to raise the $75,000-$100,000 required for its preservation. Status: in doubt, with demolition temporarily staved off by a Superior Court injunction. ¶ Pittsburgh's Allegheny County Jail, part...

...Proud Rebel (Samuel Goldwyn Jr.; Buena Vista) is a sheep-country western that offers the customers little more than the chance to count sheep-with the predictable result that the picture is a 103-minute snore. The heroes are a Confederate veteran and his ailing son (played by Alan Ladd and his winsome, talented eleven-year-old son David). The boy saw his mother killed by Sherman's troops and was literally struck dumb at the sight. He and his father are wandering northward through what the script calls Illinois-actually a spectacular piece of Utah scenery-looking...
