After Pyongyang's nuclear test in October, Tokyo slapped every sanction it could on the country, down to banning the trade in used bicycles. North Korea continually calls for Japan's exclusion from the talks, claiming that Tokyo is "wasting time by bringing to the table irrelevant issues" - a reference to the abductions, which Tokyo considers unsettled. ...practical upshot is that there will be more same-sex ceremonies, which some Conservative rabbis have been performing already without official sanction. The University of Judaism, a seminary in Los Angeles, will almost certainly begin making gay rabbis immediately; New York's Jewish Theological Seminary will debate the issue and probably decide to follow suit. Two smaller seminaries in Argentina and Hungary may continue the no-gays route...

...human liberty and that the active presence of religion in society is a source of progress and enrichment for all. This assumes, of course, that religions do not seek to exercise direct political power, as that is not their province, and it also assumes that they utterly refuse to sanction recourse to violence as a legitimate expression of religion...
