Despite the King's allusion to "struggling against mud," Queensway has in fact been cut in sandstone so firm that the "sand hogs" never had to work under air pressure. In 1925 the chipping was started by Princess Mary with a pneumatic drill. Two pilot tunnels, each 12 ft. in diameter, were cut out from Liverpool and Birkenhead until in 1928 only a thin curtain of stone hung between them in mid stream. ...hundred yards from where the Bordens paddled in is a Turkish powder factory. A Turkish sentry strolled up accompanied by a soldier. They collared Professor Borden and took from him $44. The Bordens scuttled to their rubber boat and paddled away. Soon they struck a sand bar and five Turkish soldiers waded out to nab them. Obviously his Conservative Government, returned to power in 1929 and on the defensive all through Depression, was in a hopeless fix. The Liberals had not won Ontario for 29 years but they were going to win now with a young dirt farmer named Mitchell ("Mitch") Hepburn as their New Dealer...
