...town of Graceville (Pop. 2,500) squats just inside the Florida line, in the company of Noma and Esto and Miller Crossroads, like a turtle broiling in the oppressive Florida Panhandle. The monotonous inland heat is broken only by occasional swirls of wind which lift the fine sand from the sidewalks and scatter it against the weathered frame buildings. Along Brown Street, the main drag, ragged white farmers and mute Negroes sprawl on benches propped against the buildings in the shade of awnings. There is not much for them to do except read the Dothan (Ala.) Eagle or dip snuff...

...planes ... of light and shadows and surface not nearly so nice and smooth as plasterer Super Plaster Man intended with infallible carpenter level bubble ... not so foolproof as you thought bub, little lumps and ridges up there and lines ... like spines on crests of waves of white desert movie sand each one with MGM shadow longshot of the ominous A-rab coming up over the next crest for only the sinister Saracen can see the road and you don't know how many subplots you left up there Plaster Man, trying to smooth it "all" out ... with your carpenter...

Carolyn Leaf, however, did the loveliest work of the evening. Her animated film of Peter and the Wolf, done in black sand, was beautiful, alive, and truly elegant. The movie absorbs the idiom of story and music to sing the terror of the wolf and the forest, and the pathos of the animals that are eaten...
