DIED. Roy Harris, 81, prolific composer often called "the Walt Whitman of American music"; after several strokes; in Santa Monica, Calif. The big, rawboned musical pioneer was born in a log cabin, perhaps appropriately, on Lincoln's birthday in Lincoln County, Okla. In the late 1920s he studied classical composition under Nadia Boulanger in Paris. But his vigorous rhythms and clean melodic lines were more reflective of the open spaces and the expansive optimism of his native land than of Europe. "America," he said, "is the richest, strongest, best fed of countries. Why should our composers produce fussy little...
...Mexicans today wrest a living from the junk heap. In Mexico City, occupants of $250,000 houses in posh suburbs like Bosques de las Lomas daily witness scenes that evoke images from Dante's Inferno. Beneath a perpetual mushroom cloud of pollution rising from a huge garbage dump called Santa Fe, 1,000 pepenadores (those who pick things up) sift through a pile of rubble 1.6 miles long and hundreds of feet high for bones, paper, glass and other recyclable items. By selling this refuse to a trash king, the pepenadores can earn more than the daily minimum wage...
DIED. John Cromwell, 91, stage and screen actor, director and producer for more than 70 years; of a blood clot in the lung; in Santa Barbara, Calif. Lured from Broadway to Hollywood in 1928, he directed Tom Sawyer, Of Human Bondage and Algiers. A founder of the Screen Directors' Guild, Cromwell was hounded out of Hollywood in the early '50s for his pro-labor leanings. Last year he reappeared on the screen in Robert Altman's A Wedding...
...that he is 68. Holding out his glass of tonic water, he said,"Look, not even a ripple"; and sure enough, the surface of the drink was as tranquil as the candidate's mood. He told a questioner that he had just spent his August vacation at his Santa Barbara ranch putting in 400 ft. of fence posts the size of telephone poles. "Age is not a major question," he said. "Maybe there is nothing wrong with a little maturity -someone who remembers the Great Depression...
...these desires seems to be the only one unfulfilled. Near by is a ring for his quarter horses and another ring for showing his cattle. "I think I've got the finest herd of young bulls hi the country," the master breeder proudly boasts of his shiny red Santa Gertrudis cattle. He and Nellie have three children and seven grandchildren.* They are avid antique collectors, and their home, furnished partly from their travels and partly from carefully following estate auctions, contains screens from Bah', Persian carpets, eleven hand-carved doors, a marble dining room floor from a London mansion, plus...
