...Umbrian capital of Perugia is never more glorious than on a long summer evening when its medieval streets are filled with the sound of jazz. After a day devoted to touring, swimming or an extremely long lunch, there's nothing like settling into Perugia's Arena Santa Giuliana to hear the endlessly inventive saxophonist Sonny Rollins deconstruct the melody of, say, Thelonious Monk's Crepuscule with Nellie - in just the kind of magical twilight that might have inspired it. Monk's angular ballad could tumble out of Rollins' horn on July 17, when the star headlines the Umbria Jazz Festival...
...invited them to play their first London show - opening for him at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall last September. Although Deasy insists "it's the lazy assumption that this is just a summer album," these tunes wouldn't sound quite right on a rainy day. Take the opener Santa Cruz (You're Not That Far), with its bouncy bass and sun-streaked harmonies. Deasy's breathy vocals (his Emerald Isle accent dissolving into a surfer's drawl) make him sound like J. Mascis backed by the Beach Boys. Big Sur begs to be blared from a car speeding along...
...spam are spoofs of one sort or another. Brian Westby, a porn-website owner based in St. Louis, Mo., was a classic spoofer: the subjects for his Xrated spam included "Good evening," "What's going on?" and "Please resend the email." Westby's spam deluged a bank in Santa Barbara, Calif., and an Internet service provider in Coatesville, Pa., some of whose clients angrily canceled their service. The FTC finally got a federal judge in Chicago to shut down Westby's operation. A trial is pending...
Some spam victims aren't waiting for the state laws to kick in. They have become spam vigilantes. Marketer Dan Balsam in Santa Monica, Calif., has waged a one-man legal campaign against spammers who refuse to remove him from their mailing lists. No judgment has netted him more than $1,000, but Balsam isn't in it for the money. "I'm trying to raise the cost of spammers doing business," he says. Los Angeles software engineer Bill Silverstein has taken an even more creative approach. When he wanted to sue a company that refused to stop sending...
...Crimson’s hot stretch began during its first-ever appearance at the NorCal Invitational, which features 16 of the top teams in the country. There, Harvard beat UC-Santa Cruz and then-No. 19 UC-Davis to finish 13th after falling to then-No. 12 UC-Santa Barbara and then-No. 3 and eventual tournament champion...
