...Rigg, as Martha, the university president's daughter frustrated with her underachieving history-teacher husband, is acid, sexy and funny without turning into a camp diva spewing one-liners. She is matched snide-for-snide by David Suchet (PBS's Poirot), with his oversize glasses and chiseled, world-weary sarcasm. Together with Lloyd Owen and Clare Holman as the young couple drawn into the game playing, they bring out all the lacerating power and poignancy of Albee's depiction of the blasted American Dream. Make that everyone's dream...

...three years, I have had the opportunity and privilege of sharing my opinion with all of you. Although I admit that I have complained quite a bit, that I have often written words of anger and disappointment with a biting sarcasm which has certainly maintained me in the solid consistency of the Saturday column of The Crimson (affectionately known as the "lighter day" paper), I have learned a lot, and I have grown as a writer and as a person. During Gregory's first evening with Hannah, Rose asks her mother to quit her interrogation and go prepare desert: "I've raised two daughters, I've buried a husband, I've made my coffee," she responds in perfect deadpan. Mimi Rogers is equally vicious...

Despite his unremitting sense of comic timing, Guthrie's show has its share of heart-felt--bordering on saccharine--moments. While his primary voice is one of cheerful sarcasm, he does stoop to write the kind of wistful and syrupy stuff into which American folk music has deteriorated. Guthrie's newer songs attempt poetic appraisals of the human condition--rather than satiric ones--which pale before the nutty genius of his older work. And when Guthrie, in his words, "sings pretty" instead of hokey and talky, he sounds a lot like Bob Dylan. But if this is a comparison which...
