...three searches, they had not found the "plains and meadows" of sargassum weed commonly reported as forming the Sargasso Sea (TIME, July 20) east of the West Indies. Small, shallow patches of the weed were encountered, and these teemed with marine life. "The Humboldt "Current is gone . . . is extinct.''* Nowhere had they encountered the sweep of icy water that flows up along the west coast of South America from the Antarctic. ...expanse of ocean bounded roughly by 25° and 30° N. and 38° and 60° W., which currents make a back-water accumulating flotsam. The masses and banks of sargassum weed impeded Columbus for a fortnight on his first voyage to the New World (September, 1492). Beebe reported continuous rough weather. He described taking his first specimens of marine surface-walking insects-a Sargassum fish with fins like hands-and a mass of its eggs which are now hatching in the aquarium of the Arcturus. In spite of the weather, bottom dredging was possible to a depth of three miles. A half-inch cable, containing seven strands of 19 wires each (133 wires in all), was paid out from the drums for three hours, while the steamer drifted in the trough of the swell. The steamer proceeded at about three knots an hour. It then required...

...iron "pulpit" lowered over the bow has proved a great success. Air. Beebe posted himself at that vantage point and, submerged to the waist at every pitch of the vessel, scooped up many specimens. Patches of Sargassum weed were encountered, even before reaching Bermuda, and specimens of weed taken with the crabs and little fishes which accompany...
