...Byrem of Bloomsburg is now Lacy J. Dalton of Santa Cruz, Calif. -she can start to sing about it. Her first album, which has sold well since Columbia issued it in March, is full of rue, muscle and hot sauce. Lacy J. works country territory, but with the bright sass and brass of a newcomer bound to make a mark. Those easygoing steel guitars and refrains about wrung-dry love affairs start to sound like clarion calls when Lacy dresses them for action. With a great many folks already getting her message. Columbia plans to release a second Dalton album...
...Benatar, 27, was born, like Shipley, in Brooklyn, and there is a lot of New York in their voices and their wise, wily, wounded attitudes. But if Shipley evokes various girl groups, Benatar sounds like all of them packed tight into one. She can put a lot of sass into a song like I Need a Lover ("Who won't drive me crazy"). Benatar's teen-age studies as a coloratura soprano have taught her, she says, "a lot of technique and stamina - I can scream without hurting myself...
Mozart: Don Giovanni (Baritone Bernd Weikl and Bass-Baritone Gabriel Bacquier, Sopranos Margaret Price and Sylvia Sass, London Opera Chorus, London Philharmonic, Sir Georg Solti conductor, London; 4 LPs). "Summer lightning made audible" was Shaw's metaphor for this miraculous score, and it serves well to describe Solti's performance-swift, dramatic, deft. The tragic hints in the work are systematically underplayed; the elegant comic surface remains unbroken. Colin Davis' 1974 recording, with its darker moods and more muscular texture, still provides a compelling alternative reading. But the splendid cast and Solti's conducting make this...

...himself, Director Ralph Bakshi knew these dangers; he also knew that the task of translating this ring-cycle to the screen had stymied some of the most formidable names in Hollywood, including Walt Disney, and still he plunged ahead. Bakshi brought to this project none of the brass and sass that animated his earlier cartoon features including the X-rated Fritz the Cat and the jive-talking Heavy Traffic. If reverence had wings, his new picture would fly. The fact that it hobbles simply proves again that the road to Mordor is paved with good intentions...
