Well they might. R.R.P. is a remarkable index of new-age creeds. In the Church of Satan, worship equipment includes candles, a bell, a chalice, elixir, a sword, a gong, parchment and "a model phallus." (Not that Army chaplains are likely to have to supply them, since ritual secrecy is also part of Satanism.) There is also the Native American Church, an Indian group that has won court approval to get high on peyote during weekly or monthly rituals that run all night. The Army does not state whether the peyote rites must end in time for reveille...

Sorel's style is best when it reveals the foibles of its subject graphically: Gloria Steinem as a knight in tarnished amour, Scoop Jackson as a sheriff with a beltful of missiles, Woody Allen as Satan. His critiques of the Watergaters lean too heavily on the obscene- but then so did the malefactors...

Part of the problem is that little Damien has miraculously aged almost a decade in the two years since we left him tearless at his parents' grave, a nominal orphan at five. That angelic-looking child - so hard to believe Satan had anything to do with him! - is now a broody cadet in a military school. Though the deviltry goes somewhat further than short-sheeting the beds or spreading rumors about saltpeter in the food, there is still not enough contrast between Damien's visible aspect and his true nature to make him either lively or ironic...

Since the Second Vatican Council's denunciation of antiSemitism, however, a group of townspeople led by Head Woodcarver Hans Schwaighofer has been agitating to dump the lurid script. Last year Schwaighofer's group staged a trial run of a 1750 version that makes Satan the heavy and, like the New Testament, portrays the Jews as divided over Jesus. In February the town council voted to use that version for 1980. Germany's bishops were privately relieved, and the American Jewish Committee rejoiced at a New York City press conference...
