...noon Saturday, more than two-thirds of Oahu had power restored, 18 hours after the blackout started. The outage shuttered shopping malls and businesses and forced the Honolulu airport to cancel flights. Traffic signals went dark, leaving motorists crawling through streets with no lights. The Honolulu police department called in all available officers for duty, blanketing the island with a force of more than 1,300 men and women. Long lines formed at the few grocery stores with backup generators as residents shopped for candles, bottled water and ways to pass the time. "Power was restored to the residence during...

Obama's welfare during the blackout, which lasted through the night and well into Saturday morning, was of major concern for many Oahu residents. Callers inquired about his safety during an emergency radio show on the one station that was able to broadcast on AM frequencies, and local radio personalities watched his compound from afar, searching for signs of light. Saturday's attack was authorized two days in advance, and though no Israeli ground troops have crossed into Gaza thus far, that remains an option, according to Israeli officials. "If they retaliate, they will feel it stronger, and the number [of casualties] on the Gaza side will rise," a senior Israeli military source told TIME...

...report, released on Saturday by Iraq Body Count (IBC), an independent project that tallies statistics from NGOs and other groups, says that between 8,315 and 9,028 Iraqi civilians were killed in 2008. That compares to over 22,671 civilian deaths in 2007, and over 25,774 in 2006, according to the organization's tally. IBC has kept track of such numbers along with details of each incident since the 2003 U.S. invasion. Even so, the report cautions that the decline is only low in relative terms, and that attacks against civilians remain a serious problem. (See pictures...

...this weekend, marching in two distinctly different directions, with two different yet intertwined agendas. One group carried large party flags and raised mournful slogans. These were the supporters of the late Benazir Bhutto, who converged on the former Prime Minister's grave in the southern province of Sindh on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of her assassination. The other large mass movement was composed of Pakistani troops fanning out along the border with India - many reportedly abandoning their positions near the Afghan border - as the drumbeat of potential war between the two nuclear-armed South Asian countries grew louder...
