...artists under 40 have the cult cachet of Matthew Barney. Part performance art, part sculpture, part film, his mandarin works are outrageous spectacles of heavy makeup and dreamworld metamorphosis. Barney, 32, has appeared before his camera as a red-haired ram in a morning coat; as a satyr squirming in the backseat of a stretch limousine; as a naked and chained Houdini in Budapest, throwing himself into the Danube while Ursula Andress, as the weeping "Queen of Chain," looks...
These are not sloppy pictures off the sketch pad--the artists obviously agonized over every little detail. Some of the details are so sharp and refined, it would be absolutely impossible to do the same with a paintbrush, as in Burial of a Satyr, by Claude Gillot. The Sisters' numbers are executed with a maximum of modern-dance movement to accompany them, and they play some marvelous tricks with a large black satin blanket...

Superman-strong and Bambi-naive, Herc is an ideal foil for wily Meg (a subtle siren, wonderfully voiced by Susan Egan). She plays Barbara Stanwyck to his Eddie Bracken, while a gruff satyr (Danny DeVito) acts as Herc's mentor and parries the anti-Olympus scheming of Hades (James Woods...
