That was the pattern for Dietz's entire effort: the more spectacular his methods, the less spectacular his results. He collected hundreds of signatures for a petition to save an old carpenter shop on the annex site. The Coop bulldozed it. He pleaded with Cambridge City councilors to outlaw a bridge the Coop wanted to build across Palmer Street. The Coop has built...

...read a plaintive note in the first scouting report the Giants received on Juan's pitching, "but wants to throw curves all the time.") For another, the fastball is essentially a strikeout pitch. Sandy Koufax may get his kicks out of setting strikeout records, but Marichal would rather save his arm. "It takes at least three pitches to strike a man out," he says matter-of-factly. "It only takes one for a ground ball." In his first two games this year, against Chicago and Houston, Juan did not throw a single fastball. He gave the Cubs three hits...

Protest Would Do No Good. He cites Pius' attempt to help save the Jews of Rome from deportation by the Germans, takes note of papal statements that indicate Pius' personal anguish over Nazi atrocities. Friedlander also quotes from a long letter that the Pope wrote to Berlin's Bishop Konrad von Preysing in 1943 suggesting that an open protest would do no good, since it would only stir Hitler to worse evils. He includes the argument made by Vatican diplomats that for Pius to attack Hitler during the war would involve German Catholics in a crisis...
